How To Protect Your Pooch from Everyday Dramas

Smiling Woman With Dog

Happy, healthy dogs are pretty resilient to everyday dramas and know how to obedient and when it’s a good time to play. They are aware of their surrounds, know when it’s feeding time and remain loyal and take care of you throughout their lives. But in return, you also have to protect your pooch from the everyday dramas that he may not know about. Today we’re going to look at some of the important things that should be on your checklist when a dog is part of your family.

Fleas and Ticks

Fleas and ticks are a common skin condition in dogs because the insects are attracted to their soft, warm coats. These insects will then feed on your pet’s blood and can cause everything from allergic reactions to tick-borne diseases. Although they are more likely when the weather is warm, it is best to protect your dog throughout the year. Nexgard is a chewable flea and ticks preventative that is a monthly use treatment that will kill fleas before they can lay eggs and also prevents infestations.

Sunburn and Sunstroke

You may not think it, but dogs can get sunburn and suffer from sunstroke just like humans can. If your dog stays out in the sun for a long time, you should take precautions. Their most vulnerable parts are their nose, ears, tummy and the skin around their eyes. You can use sunscreen on your dog, but always use one specifically made for dogs. Please do check with your vet before using sunscreen to ensure it does not contain any toxic chemicals. You can also dress your dog in a coat that has UV protection. And always make sure they are well hydrated if you are spending a day at the beach or in the country. If they like to snooze in the sun, make sure to provide shade with an umbrella.

Dangerous Foods

Your dog has no idea what foods are harmful to him and which ones aren’t. So it is your responsibility to provide a healthy and balanced diet and to keep him away from toxic foods. Dogs can eat some human foods, but there are lots that can be extremely dangerous to them. These include chocolate, avocado, onions, garlic, milk, coffee, tea and grapes. Never throw these items to your trash can unless you have a smart trash can, because your dog may get into the trash can when he or she feels bored.

Oral Health

It is also important to make sure you maintain good oral health in your dog. Dental disease in dogs can lead to tartar and plaque build-up, gum inflammation, periodontal disease, and even tooth loss. Dental problems can also lead to problems with your dog’s organs including the heart, liver, and kidneys. So it’s crucial to keep on top of oral hygiene. Clean your dog’s teeth from when he is a puppy so that he is used to the process. And try and clean your dog’s teeth every day. You can also give him doggie dental chews to help him. If you notice drooling, bad breath, pawing at his face, salivating or swollen gums, you should go to the vets. They can check your dog’s teeth for any problems. Prevention is so much easier than cure.
